I have spent 10 years working in digital media starting out first with Virgin Net in 1998 before moving agency side with Razorfish in 1999.
Razorfish was many things, good and bad, but one thing is for certain, it was in agencies like Razorfish, where people like me earned their stripes. We were in at the deep end, managing multi-million pound projects, and to a great extent defining a lot of what we have seen the web and agency world become today (although not spotting the opportunity to build a megalomaniac search brand was clearly an oversight).
After Razorfish I went client side with Vodafone, my last account before the RZF assets were stripped and the carcass thrown out. Vodafone sent me off to Dusseldorf for a year, where I worked alongside Deloitte and Touche to kick-off the design and build of Vodafone’s protracted and troublesome Global Intranet. Aligning 28 disparate operating companies across the globe, each with their own culture and vision was no mean feat - and a fantastic learning experience.
I left Vodafone for BBC Broadcast in 2003, where I hooked up with old colleagues and entered a new chapter - Digital Marketing and Promotions. Promoting content for BBC channel and programme brands was only the beginning and over time I established a commercial side to our service offering, winning work to build sites for the Department of Health, the Qualifications & Curriculum Authority and BT’s new IPTV and VOD service (now BT Vision).
After 3 and a half years at the BBC (and one re-brand to Red Bee Media), I moved to my current position as Head of Production for Glass. I have played a central role in building the agency from 8 to 28 people in the past two and a half years and, as well as representing the operational side of the business on the board, I have managed the delivery teams to achieve year on year growth and revenues for 2007/8 of £1.7 million, up 300% on the previous year.
Glass has been a great place to apply my experience and by designing and implementing a robust project and production process I have focused the agency commercially and enabled a talented group of project managers, designers and technologists to deliver award winning ‘profitable’ work.
